Botanical Trivia & Newsletter Challenges

A box of kratom tea isn’t nearly as big as a cereal box, so we don’t have room for fun & games right on the package. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun here.

January 2025: Two Truths and a Lie

  1. Kratom is energizing because it’s in the coffee plant family
  2. Kava’s Latin species name “methysticum” means “intoxicating”
  3. Vanilla comes from a type of orchid flower
Answer

The lie is #1. The various species of coffee plants are in the Rubiaceae family, which is commonly referred to as the coffee plant family. And while it’s true that the kratom tree is also in this plant family, being part of this family is not the reason that kratom can be energizing. The Rubiaceae family contains over 10,000 species of plants which vary widely in their effects on humans. Kratom trees don’t produce the energizing alkaloids that are found in coffee plants, like caffeine or theobromine; kratom trees produce a different range of alkaloids, like mitragynine, that can help you stay energized through completely different physiological mechanisms. October 2024: Spooky Tree Trivia

Admittedly, the questions don’t have a classic Halloween spookyness. But if you think the unscientific prohibition of plants is spooky, then at least one of them is petrifying. Can you correctly answer all three of these kratom trivia questions?

  1. Thailand first made kratom illegal in 1943 because kratom was being used in place of government-taxed , and the country’s tax revenue was dropping as a result.
  2. In what year did Thailand officially decriminalize kratom, allowing for legal possession and usage within the country?
  3. Which of the following factors influences the alkaloid content in a kratom leaf?
    • A) The time of day the leaf is harvested
    • B) The soil composition
    • C) The age and size of the leaf
    • D) The drying and curing process
Answers

Question 1: Opium.

Question 2: 2021.

Question 3: All of the above, plus more. The levels of influence of each of these variables alone and in combination are still being studied. In some cases, the results of studies are inconsistent. For example, in one study on the morphological and physiological properties of kratom leaves, the percentage of mitragynine was higher in younger leaves, while other researchers have found that the mitragynine concentration is higher in more mature leaves.
