In the Ohio Valley, climbing is an integral aspect of mental and physical wellbeing in a region where health is often under-prioritized. It has allowed people to connect with themselves, the community, and the natural world.
Yet, in February of 2023, the Monroe County Parks Department prohibited climbing to avoid liability for injuries or damages caused by recreational users. There are laws that provide protections for owners and occupants of privately owned land or state-owned land, but despite the existence of these laws and a long history of safe climbing at Kiedaisch, the department would not reopen the wall to climbers.
All of us at Top Tree are extremely grateful to have the opportunity to tell the story of Kiedaisch and spend time with the crag community. With your help, we reached our fundraising goal to support reopening Kiedaisch!
The funds we raised will go towards new bolts for climbing routes, insurance, trail building, and other aspects of land management. We’ve partnered with Ohio Climbers Coalition and Access Fund to replace all of the plated steel bolts with stainless steel bolts at Kiedaisch Wall. Once this is done, we hope to see the Monroe County Parks Department allow climbing at Kiedaisch again.
These efforts will help to decrease risk, prevent damage to the land, and increase fun and wellbeing for all. Cheers!
Presently, climbing is prohibited on park property, but an adjacent landowner permits climbing on the cliffs there. We are expanding the trails and putting in new routes now! Keep checking Mountain Project as we add the available climbs to the map
